Convert a Word file to a draft or template

This article shows how you can convert a .docx file from Word or Google docs to an editable Contractbook template or draft

Many of Contractbook's powerful functionalities happen in the editor. For example, to get the most out of Contractbook, you want to use templates to control the versioning of your contracts, and you want to add data fields to your contracts to assign them to collaborators and signees and run reports later on. To do all of this, your want to use our native contract editor.

But when you are just getting started with Contractbook, it's likely you have used Word or Google docs to work with contracts before. You might already have a version of your contract in Word that you want to use as a starting point. This article will show you how you can simply convert your contracts from Word or Google docs to Contractbook.

Save your Word or Google docs file as a .docx

First, save your contract in Word or Google docs as a .docx file. In Word, just saving the file will always default to a .docx format, so you don't need to do anything other than locating the file on your computer. In Google docs, navigate to File > Download > Microsoft Word (.docx) to download your document as a .docx file.

Hint: Make sure you resolve or remove any open comments or suggestions from the document before saving it.

Create a template from Word

Back in Contractbook, go to the Templates page and select the main button New template. Choose the last option to Create a template from Word. Now just select the .docx file from your computer in the upload dialogue.

After you uploaded your file, you will see your document as a native Contractbook template. Scroll down to inspect your template. Formatting like like headings, list styles and alignment should be preserved.

As a next step, you might want to upload your logo to the top right corner of the template. Then, you could create some data fields in your contract template for parts of the contract that will likely change from contract to contract or which you want a contract signee fill in later.

Create a draft from Word

If you want to skip the template step, you can also just create a contract draft right away from your Word file. Navigate to the Contracts page or to the Home page and select the main blue button Create and Sign and choose the option to Create a draft from Word. In the upload dialogue, simply select the .docx file from your computer to start the upload.

You will get a nicely formatted contract draft that you can edit and eventually send for signature.

As a next step, you might want to scroll through the contract draft to make any minor edits or upload your own logo to the top right corner of the draft. On the top and bottom of your contract as well as in the sidebar, you can define the parties and signees of this contract. You could also create data fields in the contract and assign them to collaborators or signees to fill.

When everything looks good, you can go ahead and send the contract for signature - easy!
